TUESDAY, JULY 28, 2009 CHARLOTTE, N.C., July 27 (UPI) -- A Seattle man said he was arrested at a Charlotte, N.C., airport and detained as an Army deserter, even though he has never been in the military. Chris Parks, 27, said he was returning from Central America with some friends when his name caught the attention of Homeland Security workers at the airport, KOMO-TV, Seattle, reported Monday. Parks said he was told he'd been flagged as a deserter. Obviously, a major mixup. But just be grateful this wasn't Henry Louis Gates of Harvard. Can you imagine? Can you just imagine?
ROME (Reuters) - Two Swedes expecting the golden beaches of the Italian island of Capri got a shock when tourist officials told them they were 650 km (400 miles) off course in the northern town of Carpi, after mistyping the name in their GPS. "It's hard to understand how they managed it. I mean, Capri is an island," said Giovanni Medici, a spokesman for Carpi regional government, told Reuters Tuesday. "It's the first time something like this has happened." Oh, it's okay. In Sweden they're taught that all cultures, places and things are of equal value, so what's 400 miles? Besides, correct spelling is such a middle-class idea.
MONDAY, JULY 27, 2009 CINCINNATI, July 26 (UPI) -- A weekly movie night event in Cincinnati had shaggier guests than usual as dogs were given a one-time free pass to the event, dog owners say. Given the level of today's movies, I'm sure the dogs had a great time.
BERLIN (Reuters) - Germany's Social Democrat (SPD) health minister came under pressure Sunday to explain why she took her official limousine, complete with chauffeur, to Spain where the vehicle was stolen. Opposition politicians demanded Ulla Schmidt provide more details about the affair, which could damage the SPD who trail Merkel's conservatives by more than ten points in opinion polls in the run-up to a September 27 federal election. Neither she nor the chauffeur knew how to lock the car? Whatever happened to German efficiency?
